Kickstarting a 1 trillion dollar market for carbon renewal

Podcast notes from an episode of Catalyst with Shayle Kann and Nan Ransohoff

climate

Overview

  • Earth already has a massive carbon cycle
  • 10to1000s/tonne to remove carbon, depending on industry
  • Stripe, alongside Microsoft and Shopify, has been radically transparent about decarbonisation projects they have funded
  • Stripe buy carbon removal from promising technologies to get them down the cost curve and hopefully reduce their costs in the future

Carbon Removal

  • World emits 50Gt of CO2 a year, need to get to net zero by 2050
  • Need a huge emissions reduction combined with carbon removal, as some industries require large emission outputs
  • Need to separate and store 10Gt of carbon a year by 2050
  • Carbon removal different to carbon capture, where the latter is capturing carbon directly from a smokestack or similar, where removal is taking CO2 out of the ambient air
